Why DHL is our default recommendation
DHL Express is what we ship 78% of orders with. The reasons: customs clearance is more reliable (DHL has dedicated customs handling teams in every Western market), tracking actually updates every step of the way, and door-to-door times are consistent. FedEx is slightly faster on US East Coast routes (typically by one day) but runs about 30% more expensive on most routes; we recommend it only if you specifically need that one extra day. Standard postal uses national postal services (USPS, Royal Mail, Canada Post) on the destination side — it's cheaper by $18-22 on most routes but adds 9-12 days, and tracking goes dark for the first 7-10 days which makes a lot of buyers nervous.
Cost breakdown for a typical order
The numbers below are real averages from the past 90 days of shipments. Actual cost varies by exact box dimensions, declared value, peak season surcharges (December especially), and DHL's fluctuating fuel surcharge.
USA (most common destination)
DHL Express: $24-34 for 1 pair, $34-46 for 2 pairs, 5-9 days door-to-door. FedEx International Priority: $32-44 for 1 pair, 4-7 days. Standard postal (E-packet/USPS): $8-12 for 1 pair, 14-21 days, tracking is sparse for first week.
United Kingdom
DHL Express: $26-36 for 1 pair, 5-8 days. FedEx: similar pricing, slightly slower than DHL on UK routes (counter-intuitively). Standard postal: $9-13, 12-18 days. UK customs often adds VAT on declared values over £39 (about $50) — DHL pre-pays this and bills you on delivery, which is faster but feels less fun than getting it duty-free.
Canada
DHL Express: $28-38 for 1 pair, 6-9 days. CBSA is generally light-touch on personal-use parcels but can apply HST/GST on declared values over CAD $20 — most factories declare $30-40, so this hits more often than UK. Budget for an extra $5-12 in duty.
Australia
DHL Express: $34-48 for 1 pair, 7-12 days. Australia has the longest transit times in our covered markets due to flight routing and quarantine inspection. FedEx sometimes routes through Singapore which speeds things up. Australian Border Force has the highest seizure rate in our log (about 1.4% vs ~0.3% for the others) — usually for declared values clearly off, so we use accurate declarations to AU.
Germany & rest of EU
DHL Express: $24-32 for 1 pair to Germany/France/Netherlands; $26-36 for Italy/Spain/Sweden. 5-9 days depending on country. EU import VAT (19% Germany, 20% France, 21% Netherlands) applies on declared values over €150 in most cases — we usually declare under that threshold for single-pair orders.
Multi-pair orders save money
Going from 1 pair to 2 pairs typically costs +$10-14 in shipping, not +$30. Going to 3 pairs costs +$8-12 on top of that. Pro move: if you and a friend both want pairs, share a shipment. We've handled hundreds of split orders where one address receives the pairs and the friends settle up afterward.
What's in the box (so customs declarations make sense)
A single pair plus original box weighs 1.0-1.4 kg (Salomon XT-6 is heaviest, Yeezy Slide is lightest). Two pairs runs 2.0-2.5 kg. The box is approximately 35 × 22 × 12 cm for a single pair. Customs paperwork lists the contents as "athletic shoes" with the declared value we agree on in chat — this is a conversation, not a fixed number, because what works in the US (declare $30, almost always clears) doesn't work in Australia (declare $30, gets flagged for being clearly low).
